SLAMer of the Month – Michele Snyder

My name is Michele Snyder and I have been with SLAM Fort Drum since they opened in March. The first location I SLAM’d at was SLAM Columbus. I was sitting at a soccer game for my oldest son one day when I saw a girl there wearing a SLAM shirt. I asked her about it, and she told me I should join her for a free class. At the time, I was very unhappy with the baby weight I still had even though my baby was 7 months old. It was so much easier to lose the baby weight after my boys! I agreed to go to the free trial class. I went and it took me another two weeks to go back but then I was hooked! I had to find a double stroller, yoga mat, and weights. I went for about two months to the Columbus SLAM and lost all the extra baby weights I had! I will forever be thankful to Lisa Wrightquick for introducing me to SLAM.

I am a mother to 3 kids (10, 6, and 2), go to school full time (almost graduated!!), and work as needed at the school district here as a substitute teacher. When I first got to Fort Drum, it was so hard for me to find friends that wanted to live healthy. I read labels, some would even call me a crunchy mama. I have to workout and eat right for my body and mind to be right. Virtual SLAM started just one month after moving to Fort Drum. I jumped in immediately. I knew I needed it in my life. I finished the first virtual SLAM and signed up for a second one but did not do much in it. I was feeling defeated but still wanted to try again. I started virtual SLAM again in October of 2018 and did another one in January 2019. I felt very motivated and felt more like myself again. SLAM Fort Drum opened in March 2019 and I have been a member ever since they opened. I am so thankful that I found my people and that they make me feel motivated and they make me want to meet my fitness goals. I always tell people that it is not just about working out, it is truly the community that SLAM provides. With Moms Night Outs, playgroups, and just meeting the best of friends through SLAM, it is hard to not love everything SLAM.

My kids and husband all join in with how active I am now. We love going on bike rides and sometimes even go on family runs. We love to hike, kayak, and do other things to keep us active. I love being healthy enough to run around and have the energy to play with my kids. I love what my husband and I are teaching our children. I love that we also make sure to give each other time to workout so that we can stay healthy. Before SLAM, let’s be honest, I would have not made the time to workout on my own at home daily or even most days.

It saddens me to know that eventually we will undergo another PCS season and I will have to leave the SLAM Fort Drum community. What helps with these types of transitions is that there is virtual SLAM if I move to a location without SLAM and that in other places there will be a new SLAM family waiting for me.
