SLAM Boss

Sheena Headshot

Rosa Stevens | rosa@sweatlikeamother.com

Rosa is an Army wife, mom to three sweet boys and one grumpy old dog, musician, and certified SLAMaholic! She is from Burlington, NC and has a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Therapy from Appalachian State University. She is an ACE certified Group Fitness Instructor and is CPR & First Aid certified through the American Red Cross. Rosa also holds a To Birth and Back coaching certificate.

Rosa first found SLAM in late 2019 while living in Oklahoma, at SLAM Lawton (now Lawton-Fort Sill). As someone who struggled to find a type of exercise she enjoyed, SLAM checked ALL the boxes for her, and she was completely hooked. After their family moved to Virginia, she joined SLAM Newport News as a founding member, began coaching in 2022, and became the Newport News SLAMboss in June 2023!

The military moved the Stevens Family once again in summer of 2024, to El Paso, Texas. Rosa jumped right into the SLAM El Paso community upon arrival, soon after she began coaching, and then became owner of SLAM El Paso in January 2025. Though she is fully immersed in SLAM El Paso, she continues to do all the things behind the scenes, as well coach SLAM the Alarm classes twice a week for SLAM Newport News. She loves staying connected to her Virginia SLAMfam, via the zoom room, and visiting throughout the year to run races together. Rosa and her family hope to return to the Newport News area as soon as the military allows them to!

SLAM truly transformed Rosa’s life, and she loves sharing the power of community and movement with other Mamas! Her favorite ways to SLAM are heavy weights and running with friends!

The Newport News Team

Rosa Stevens | Instructor

Rosa is an Army wife of 11 years and Mom to 3 sweet boys. She is from Burlington, North Carolina. Rosa has a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Therapy from Appalachian State University. She is an ACE certified Group Fitness Instructor and CPR/First Aid certified through the American Red Cross. Rosa is also a certified Music Together teacher and teaches in Virginia Beach and Norfolk, VA.

Rosa first found SLAM in January 2020 in Lawton, Oklahoma. She was hooked from day 1! SLAM Lawton (now Fort Sill) helped her survive the first few months of the Pandemic. The Stevens Family moved to Norfolk, Virginia in July 2020 and Rosa was devastated that there wasn’t a SLAM close by. She was so lost without SLAM, but thankfully that only lasted a few months until SLAM Newport News opened in January 2021! Even though it is a 40+ minute drive one way, Rosa made the trek and is an original member of SLAM Newport News. She started coaching in April of 2022, and when the opportunity to become SLAM Boss was presented to her, Rosa couldn’t say no! SLAM has changed her life and improved it in countless ways and she is so excited to share this incredible community with the women of Newport News, Williamsburg, and the whole Hampton Roads area!

Ashlee Gitkos | Instructor

Ashlee is an ACE certified group fitness instructor and is CPR/AED certified. Growing up in Oklahoma, she always thought of herself as “athletically challenged.” She was in marching band all the way through college (Boomer Sooner!), which she’ll tell you takes more conditioning than you realize. Ashlee discovered fitness a few months into her first desk job and was hooked with the excitement that came from discovering what her body was capable of. Ashlee found SLAM in 2013 in Savannah, GA, before her first child turned 1. She fell in love with the SLAM village and the workouts that were both challenging and fun at the same time. Her high energy and enthusiasm for fitness are contagious. Ashlee and her husband have a daughter and two sons. Ashlee’s favorite ways to SLAM are burpees and sprints.
