Newport News Park is one of the largest municipal parks (7,500+ acres) east of the Mississippi River, and is conveniently located right off of I-64 in the heart of the Virginia Peninsula in northern Newport News. The park offers a wide variety of activities, including hiking, biking, mountain biking, picnicking, paddle boating, canoeing, archery and freshwater fishing. The park has several playgrounds for kids and plenty of open space to S.L.A.M.
Parking & Meeting Info
When you drive in the main entrance, off of Jefferson Street, take your first right. We meet at the park across from the Ranger Station. You can park near the playground or along the frisbee golf course. We meet in front of the two big pavilions next to the sand volleyball court.

SLAM Boss
Rosa Stevens | rosa@sweatlikeamother.com
Rosa is an Army wife, mom to three sweet boys and one grumpy old dog, musician, and certified SLAMaholic! She is from Burlington, NC and has a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Therapy from Appalachian State University. She is an ACE certified Group Fitness Instructor and is CPR & First Aid certified through the American Red Cross. Rosa also holds a To Birth and Back coaching certificate.
Rosa first found SLAM in late 2019 while living in Oklahoma, at SLAM Lawton (now Lawton-Fort Sill). As someone who struggled to find a type of exercise she enjoyed, SLAM checked ALL the boxes for her, and she was completely hooked. After their family moved to Virginia, she joined SLAM Newport News as a founding member, began coaching in 2022, and became the Newport News SLAMboss in June 2023!
The military moved the Stevens Family once again in summer of 2024, to El Paso, Texas. Rosa jumped right into the SLAM El Paso community upon arrival, soon after she began coaching, and then became owner of SLAM El Paso in January 2025. Though she is fully immersed in SLAM El Paso, she continues to do all the things behind the scenes, as well coach SLAM the Alarm classes twice a week for SLAM Newport News. She loves staying connected to her Virginia SLAMfam, via the zoom room, and visiting throughout the year to run races together. Rosa and her family hope to return to the Newport News area as soon as the military allows them to!
SLAM truly transformed Rosa’s life, and she loves sharing the power of community and movement with other Mamas! Her favorite ways to SLAM are heavy weights and running with friends!
