Meet Jessica, September SLAMer of the Month

Hi! I’m Jessica Crandall and I have been a part of SLAM Space Coast since the grand opening in February! I’m originally from Sacramento, CA and I met my husband as a freshman at Brigham Young University Utah. We were married just after I graduated and immediately moved to Spangdahlem Germany where we had our first two children Reese (10) and Finn (7). After 6 years overseas we moved to Patrick AFB, FL where we had our second two children Sage (4) and Remi (2). I love traveling and dream of visiting every country in the world, so far, I’ve traveled to 24 including our most recent trip to Australia.

My whole life I have been very active and sports oriented. I played basketball and soccer competitively from the time I was young until I graduated high school. Once I was married and started having kids I remained active but was never in the kind of shape I had been in when I was playing sports. I bounced back quickly from my first two kids but it took me a long time to lose the weight after my third. I was really struggling to get my body back after I had Remi. Working out at home has never worked for me. I was having a hard time finding a class for a mom that had to bring kids along with her. I was beginning to think I’d have to wait until all my kids were in school before I’d be able to get in shape that’s when I saw Katrina’s post for Stroller Strong Moms – Space Coast. I went to the preview classes she held and was amazed at how awesome it was, it was everything I had been looking for.

I’ve made huge strides with my fitness during the last six months, but I’ve also become a part of an amazing community of women. We work hard, but we laugh even harder. Katrina is such a great instructor and is always encouraging me to push myself harder to reach my goals. When I started SLAM’n I couldn’t run a mile without needing to stop and walk and after 3 months I ran my first 5k. It hasn’t just been my physical health that has improved, being a stay at home mom can often feel very isolating but being around other mothers that are experiencing the same day to day struggles has strengthened my mental and emotional well-being as well. Through Stroller Strong Moms I’ve formed amazing friendships and found my tribe.

I love that my kids see how hard I’m working and how important fitness is to me. My favorite part is when my two-year-old climbs out of her stroller at the end of class and starts imitating burpees, wall sits, or whatever else we might have done that day. I love that she enjoys coming to class and getting to see all her friends. When she flexes and tells me “I strong” I can’t help but feel the same.
